Established

The story of Topnotch Gyms Soho is a clear example of how a brand can come back stronger after many years. The original Topnotch health club was started in 1991 by entrepreneur Matthew Harris. It grew quickly into a popular chain of gyms across the UK. In 2000 the company even floated on the stock market, showing how successful it had become. Over the next ten years, however, the original business sold its gyms to budget fitness operators and the Topnotch name slowly disappeared from the high street.

In late 2022 a brand-new company brought the name back to life. The original founder, Matthew Harris, returned to lead the project. He joined hands with experienced executives from Affordable Fitness and Fitness4Less. Together they decided to create a fresh version of Topnotch that would offer a premium yet affordable gym experience in busy city centres.

The first new club opened in the heart of London’s Soho. The team took an old underground car park just off Broadwick Street and spent £1.3 million turning it into a modern fitness space. After careful planning and building work, Topnotch Gyms Soho officially opened its doors on 3 January 2023. Members quickly noticed the high-quality equipment, clean design and friendly atmosphere.

In January 2026 the club took another big step forward. It opened a brand-new Reformer Pilates Lab in the basement. This addition turned the lower floor into a full multi-discipline training area where people can enjoy both traditional gym workouts and specialised Pilates classes under one roof.

From its 1991 beginnings to its careful 2022 revival and the latest Pilates expansion, Topnotch Gyms Soho shows how a well-loved fitness brand can return with fresh energy and continue to grow.

Boutique Layout & Specialised Training Zones

Although it is located in the basement, the club has an impressive boutique layout that is equipped with state-of-the-art fitness equipment:

  • Main Gym Floor & Strength: The main floor features the latest plate-loaded strength machines, pin-select weight stacks, a full suite of free weights, and Olympic lifting platforms.
  • Cardio & Power Labs: A variety of cardio machines, including a 12-meter sled track, advanced treadmills, and Wattbike Nucleus with pedals’ power monitoring.
  • Three Dedicated Classrooms: The club offers a custom cycling class, a main group training room, and a new Reformer Lab that provides specially adapted Pilates equipment.

Class Lineup & Community Integration

  • Class Matrix: The club offers a great variety of group fitness classes including HYROX, Les Mills circuits, Boxcon, high-intensity HIITLAB, and relaxing Yoga.
  • Booking & Tech: The club has implemented an application that enables members to make bookings or amend their personal preferences using on-floor iPads.
  • Recovery Offerings: The changing facilities are luxury-inspired and complemented by an authentic, relaxing Nordic Sauna, a fresh protein shake bar, and internal commuting bike storage.

Nice big gym. Staff is super lovely. I highly recommend to go somewhere for a workout in the heart of London. It’s not your usual box squeeze tight atmosphere. Bring a lock for your locker 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ …
