The UK India Business Council, as the first membership-based non-profit organisation, seeks to provide support to companies and entrepreneurs in their efforts to build business relationships and mutual beneficial partnerships. The organisation’s main purpose is to promote commercial ties between the UK and India and facilitate economic growth through increased UK-India trade, investment, and networks.

The UK India Business Council (UKIBC) was established following the Indo-British Partnership initiative launched by the heads of state in 1993. Recognising the potential of the newly opened Indian market, the UK government and businesses participated in the project, which later grew into the UKIBC network. The latter was registered as a private network in 2005 and repositioned as the UK India Business Council in 2007, thus officially becoming a non-profit organisation that builds sustainable commercial partnerships.

As a leading organisation for international business development, the UKIBC plays a critical role in facilitating business between the UK and India. It provides businesses of all sizes with market insights, intelligence, and global access to governments and networks to build mutually beneficial relationships. In addition, the company offers a wide range of services, from facilitating strategic corporate meetings to providing policy advisory and support services to members. UKIBC helps organisations engage with key stakeholders, policymakers, and influential leaders at national and regional levels. With its strong business expertise and consulting in multiple sectors, including tech, energy, healthcare, education, finance, and manufacturing, the business fosters strategic trade, investment, and networking opportunities, helping companies identify challenges and find solutions.

A company that has evolved from a government initiative in the 1990s, UKIBC helps businesses create valuable, long-standing partnerships. At the same time, the organisation boosts the economic development of the UK and India, as businesses contribute to job creation and wealth generation in both countries. Moreover, as an umbrella organisation for companies, government agencies, and stakeholders, the UKIBC establishes an effective platform for collaboration, promoting and positioning trade and investment. Thus, the UK India Business Council builds business relationships and international partnerships for a sustainable future in the UK and India.

Established

The UK India Business Council (UKIBC) was established in 2007 and has the strong support of the UK government behind it. In fact, this organisation was formed after the dissolution of the Indo-British Partnership (IBP) in order to promote business relations between the countries. The IBP existed since 1993, which makes it a longstanding organisation dedicated to the same goal as UKIBC.

Since its establishment, UKIBC has been working towards a simple objective of promoting mutual business interests between the UK and India. The organisation serves as a mediator and facilitator between private and public sectors. It allows the businesses from both countries to communicate and find new business opportunities. UKIBC promotes economic cooperation and facilitates communication between small and big business companies.

It has a team of experts who help the stakeholders understand the opportunities and challenges related to partnerships. Various meetings and reports conducted by the organisation allow it to provide the most relevant information regarding business relations between the UK and India. UKIBC allows companies to benefit from its experience and resources in order to navigate the market. It works in both private and public sectors and collaborates with different organizations to promote mutual business interests of the UK and India.

Trade and investments between the UK and India have steadily increased over the years. UKIBC has contributed to the growing relationships between business sectors in both countries and continues to be an important organisation. It promotes ongoing dialogue between stakeholders regarding business regulations, technologies, mutual opportunities, and other relevant topics. The focus on facilitating cooperation, as well as disregarding the political aspect of the economy, makes UKIBC a reliable partner for businesses in the UK and India.

Core Functions & Services

The council can be considered as an entity that helps the government address international regulatory issues and market-related concerns:
  • Strategic advisory services and assistance: It serves as a consulting partner to UK-based enterprises that want to expand their presence in India’s state markets and the opposite, Indian multinational companies that wish to penetrate the UK market.
  • Policy advocacy function: In collaboration with the Department for Business and Trade of the UK and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India, the council works on removing existing barriers to trade and improving business-friendly regulations in both jurisdictions.
  • Mutual trade promotion initiatives: In 2026 UKIBC, with the support of HSBC India, has introduced a CETA Business Utilisation Manual that provides guidance on the effective use of the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement.
